    The building, described as an "enormous ship", was designed by Indiana firm Troyer Group. It will form part of Ark Encounter – a theme park aiming to illustrate the story of the legendary great flood, in which God instructs Noah to build an ark to save his family and a pair of each of the world's animal species.

    The Ark Encounter is a full-sized replica of Noah’s Ark, as described in the book of Genesis in the Bible. It is being built using the dimensions specified in cubits. Which could have been problematic given that more than 20 different versions of a cubit exist – though it was was originally the distance from a thumb to the elbow. The builders settled on the Egyptian version of the cubit, or 20.4 inches.

    « Ark Encounter » ouvrira ses portes le 7 juillet 2016. L’annonce a été faite la semaine dernière au pied de l’attraction principale du parc : une gigantesque réplique en bois de l’Arche de Noé.     The organization is expecting 1.4 to 2.2 million to attend the attraction annually. And the ark is only part of far grander plans to include a pre-flood city and Tower of Babble. Answers in Genesis already runs a Creation Museum in Boone County.

    For the first 40 days the park is open, tickets will be available in two waves – day passes and night passes – to match the 40 days and 40 nights that the Bible says it rained during the flood. Members of the public interested in those tickets can reserve them beginning Jan. 19 on the park’s website. Normal hours of operation will begin Aug. 15 unless capacity is still being exceeded. Tickets will be $40 for adults, $28 for children and $31 for seniors. Parking is $10.

The Answers in Genesis Christian Organization is currently constructing a religious theme park in the form of the 510-foot replica of Noah's Ark, and it is targeting July 2016 as their opening date.

    The park needs another $6.5 million to complete the Ark, which they hope to raise through ticket sales and private donations. The total cost for the first phase of the park is $91 million and Ham said they have already raised about $80 million.

    The group behind the attraction, Answers in Genesis, is a "young Earth creationist group," The Guardian reports, meaning it believes that God created the Earth in six days about 6,000 years ago. So far, they have raised $23.5 million in donations to go towards the $90 million price tag. When all is said and done, the group said the ark "should become the largest timber-frame structure in the USA," and will see 1.6 million visitors in the first year. The Ark Encounter is affiliated with the Creation Museum 45 minutes away, which has a Garden of Eden area where "children play and dinosaurs roam near Eden's rivers.

The group behind the attraction, Answers in Genesis, is currently battling in court to receive public tax incentives for building the attraction.

    “There was a promise made and that promise should be kept,” Thayer said. “Gov. Beshear decided to renege on that promise and it’s my hope that soon-to-be Gov. Bevin will encourage the folks on the board that decides these tax credits to go forward with it.”

    The ark will be the largest timberframe building in the world and the park’s first phase will include 132 exhibit bays inside the ship’s hull, gardens surrounding the ark where queues will be formed, a 2,100-seat standalone restaurant, a 1,000-seat multipurpose theater that will be used for live events and a large petting zoo just outside the ark. Eventually, the Ark Encounter will encompass 800 acres with additional attractions including a restaurant on the top deck of the ark itself and a gift shop below the structure.

    Gov. Steve Beshear initially welcomed the project as one which would attract thousands of tourists to the state. But a year ago, the Beshear administration rejected an application by Answers in Genesis for about $18 million in tax incentives to help finance the project. The administration said that tax dollars cannot be constitutionally spent to advance the work of a particular religious organization.
